Selecting High Voltage Transformers

Like other types of transformers, high voltage transformers convert high levels of energy from one degree into another, this time from a very high voltage to a lower voltage. There are different types of transformer units to conduct high levels of electricity such as this, so it is important that you select the correct one based on the needs of your circuit. In all cases though, high voltage transformers use a basic design of coils and a conductor to convert one form of energy for later use in applications such as the wider distribution of power, electrical instrument applications and to further isolate a single power source.

Depending on your power needs, there are two different types of high voltage transformers available including the single phase configuration. In this set up, you would move down the primary configuration in as many as five steps till the power supply was manageable. As the number of primary windings increases so does the cost of a transformer because more and more copper is used to conduct the electricity. This feature, along with the specific type of core that is necessary to provide conduction for the transformer, makes a single phase configuration a very expensive option.

Three phase transformers are the other commonly used type of unit used in high voltage situations because you are able to work with a very high primary source of electricity and step down safely in three different phases. These transformers are often used in testing platforms, among aerospace and aeronautical applications, in the national primary grid and right in our homes. While they conduct huge amounts of electricity and can be a danger when used improperly, safety standards that regulate their use and manufacture have made them safe for home use as long as they are used correctly. The use of several primary windings, as compared to one, makes it possible to decrease the power source into more manageable voltage readings that can then be applied in more functions and overall are a better option for anyone needing to find the best transformer for their needs.

There are several other factors that determine the type of high voltage transformers that are made, though each of these features are not an integral part of the unit. Like other electrical transformers, the construction of the unit, including the core, type of transformer bushings used and the mountings that are used to ground the entire unit are essential, but none of them rely entirely on the purpose that you have for the unit. Surplus energy is dealt with in the transformer through the output type that is chosen, which can include both AC or DC types, depending on what you need. All of these features will directly determine you maximum voltage rating, but they are options that you can pick and choose from after you have decided on the best type of transformer to purchase. In most cases, the cost of the potential transformer that you select is the deciding factor, but it is also important that you purchase what you need to handle the amount of electricity that you are going to have to conduct.
